After a break in Des Moines, I called Stefani to let her know I was passing through her old stomping grounds and spoke with her over the phone all the way to my grandparents’ farm in Madison County (yes, the bridges...). When I arrived at the farm, all the kids were playing out in the yard and came running out toward the garage. Grandma and Grandpa had Aunt Julie and Uncle Bill, my cousins Kim and Kasey and their families over for dinner to greet me.
I was pretty starved despite the two enormous chili dogs I bought at the largest truck stop in the world… But Grandma had prepared pretty big dinner. We had pork chops (the big kind they eat in Iowa), green beans, cream corn casserole, baked beans, bread and three or four desserts. Kim joked the family might just be trying to fatten me up for the rest of my trip. She might have been right.
It was fun to play with all the kids and catch up with everyone else. And then I SLEPT! All caps... I was exhausted.
